How To Update Printer Firmware

What Is Printer Firmware?

The software that printers operate on is known as the ‘firmware’. Epson, the printer manufacturer, at times, releases a new version of their firmware to keep hardware up-to-date with any changes or new innovations. Most of the time, outdated firmware is not supported and may cause an interruption in printing. When there’s a new firmware update available, you’ll need to manually download it onto your printers. Use this guide to learn how to update printer firmware through the TM Utility app.

Prerequisites

  • Have your printer and a POS tablet handy.

  • You must have the Epson TM Utility app on one of your Android POS tablets. If purchased through the Arryved Hardware Catalog, the app should be pre-installed. If not, please download it from Google Play.

Limitations

  • Updating firmware through the TM Utility is only available for Epson receipt-style (thermal) printers. Kitchen (impact) printers can’t be updated this way.

How It Works

  1. Make sure your printer is plugged in, turned on, and connected to your POS network.
  2. Grab your POS tablet and open the Apps list.
  3. Find and open the Epson TM Utility app. If you don’t see it, download it from Google Play.
  4. Tap the blue bar across the top that says ‘No printer is selected’. (If a printer is selected, it’ll show the printer version name instead).
  5. From your list of printers, select the correct one. Make sure the IP address, that’s showing in the bottom right corner of the printer’s row, matches.
    1. To find your printer’s IP address, stick a pointy object in the ‘SW’ pinhole located on the back of the printer. This prints a small sheet with the IP address on it.
  6. After selecting the correct printer, you should be back on the homepage of the TM Utility app. Tap ‘Update the Firmware’.
  7. Under ‘Updatable firmware list’, tap GET.
  8. Select the WiFi dongle that you’re using with this printer. Take a look at your physical dongle on the back of the printer and select the correct one from this list.
  9. Tap NEXT
  10. Tap Download
  11. Once downloaded, tap NEXT (again).
  12.  Tap EXECUTE
  13.  Wait for the firmware update to complete. When you see a popup window with the message ‘The firmware was successfully updated’, tap OK to finalize!
