Modifiers Overview

What Are Modifiers?

Generally speaking, "Modifiers" are customizations or adjustments that your guests can request for their food and drink. They can also provide special instructions to your kitchen or bar to prepare their Menu Items as requested.

In your Arryved POS, “Item Modifiers” are the individual modifications you'd like to offer for your Menu Items.

Modifier Groups” let you group Item Modifiers together for easy ordering. You can then add any of those Modifier Groups to any Inventory Items, so that staff and guests are prompted to make the necessary choices to go with those Items when ordered.

Prerequisites

  • We recently revamped how Modifiers work in the Arryved system. To enjoy the latest version of Modifiers as mentioned in this guide, one of your Arryved Portal Super Admins needs to turn on the ‘Enable Modifiers V2Location Preference

  • To create or edit Modifiers, you must be an Arryved Portal Super Admin or an Admin with one of the following Portal Permissions:

    • INVENTORY

    • ALL ACCESS

    • FULL ADMIN

Limitations

  • Arryved does not support nested modifiers at this time. Meaning, Modifiers can’t be modified themselves.

  • Modifiers are not tracked by Inventory Quantity.

How It Works

To set up Modifiers for your Menu Items in Arryved Portal, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Create Item Modifiers

  2. Create Modifier Groups

  3. Assign Modifier Groups to desired Inventory Items (optional).

P.S. Steps 1 and 2 can be done in either order (i.e. you can make Modifier Groups first, then Item Modifiers). Once you get your hands in there, you’ll soon figure out which flow works best for you.

Once Modifiers are set up in your Arryved Portal, your service staff can apply Modifiers to Items ordered in Arryved Service. And, your guests can make selections from the Modifier Groups assigned to the Items they order  through your Arryved Online Store or OpenTab.

Create Item Modifiers

Think about the different components of your Menu Items that need to be customized by the guest, or are commonly requested to, add, remove, or substitute. Also, think about different notes, allergies, or prep instructions that the bar and kitchen often need to know.

From the ‘Modifiers’ page in your Arryved Portal, add all the possible Item Modifiers you can think of.

Examples Of Item Modifiers

  • Condiment options (Ketchup, Mustard, BBQ)

  • Protein options (Chicken, Beef, Tofu)

  • Cheese options (Cheddar, Swiss)

  • Side options (Fries, Side Salad)

  • Toppings (Pepperoni, Tomato)

  • Drink garnishes (Salt Rim, Lemon Twist)

  • Upcharges

  • Substitutions

  • Ingredients commonly removed

  • Allergies/Dietary Restrictions

  • Meat temperatures (rare, medium rare)

  • Prep instructions (cut in half, toasted, tossed)

Use the How To Create Item Modifiers guide for full instructions

Create Modifier Groups

From the ‘Modifier Groups’ page in your Arryved Portal, group Item Modifiers that go together for easy ordering. These Groups can be assigned to an Inventory Item and will then appear on the Modifier Screen when that Item is ordered.

Examples Of Modifier Groups

  • Meat Temperatures

  • Choice of Side

  • Choice of Bread

  • Choice of Cheese

  • Choice of Sauce

  • Drink Rim

  • Salad Toppings

  • Pizza Toppings

P.S. The Name of the Modifier Group will be visible to staff in Arryved Service as well as your Guests ordering through Arryved Online or OpenTab. Make sure the Name is descriptive enough to let the person ordering know what they need to do.

The options to choose from in a Modifier Group will be some of the Item Modifiers you created.

  1. For example, create a ‘Choice of Cheese’ Modifier Group and assign the “Cheddar,” “Swiss,” “Pepper Jack,” and “Gouda” Item Modifiers to it.

Required vs. Optional Modifier Groups

For each Modifier Group, you must enter a ‘Default Min. # of Mod Selections.’ This is the minimum required selection the guest must make from the Group when they order an Item that has this Group assigned to it.

  • If the Min is set to 1 or more, the Modifier Group is Required.

  • If the Min is set to 0, the Modifier Group is Optional

  • When at least one Required Modifier Group is assigned to an Inventory Item, it’ll prompt the Modifier Screen when the Item is ordered through Arryved Service. The orderer will then be required to make the appropriate selections from the Required Modifier Groups before adding the Item to the order.

    • For example, when a guest orders a cheeseburger, you can require them to select a ‘Type of Cheese’ and a ‘Choice of Side’ by making those Modifier Groups required and assigning them to your cheeseburger Item.

  • When Optional Modifier Groups are assigned to an Inventory Item, they’ll appear on the Modifier Screen for easy ordering in case they are needed, but won’t be required to make a selection to proceed.

    • For example, if guests commonly like to add or remove certain burger toppings or ask for sauces on the side, having those options on the Modifier Screen for quick access can be handy.

Chicken Or Egg

Pro Tip! You can create Modifier Groups first, then create Item Modifiers and assign them to Modifier Groups from the Item Modifier page. Whichever flow you think works best for you, go for it!

Apply Modifier Groups To Inventory Items

Now that your Item Modifiers and Modifier Groups are ready to go, you can assign them to whichever Inventory Items you want. Assigning Modifier Groups to an Item adds them to the Modifier Screen when the Item is ordered through Arryved Service, Arryved Online, and OpenTab.

  • The second half of the  How To Create Modifier Groups guide provides full instructions for this.

  • Remember, if at least one Required Modifier Group is assigned to an Inventory Item, it’ll promt the Modifiers Screen automatically in Arryved Service when the Item is ordered.

Restrict Modifiers For Specific Items

If the box next to ‘Allow Service To Apply Any Modifier?’ is checked, then staff can apply any Item Modifier to the given Item being ordered in Arryved Service by using the Modifier Search to find it.

If the box is unchecked, only Item Modifiers that are in the Modifier Groups specifically assigned to the given Item can be applied to the Item when ordered.

P.S. This doesn’t apply to Arryved Online or OpenTab because we don’t want to expose a zillion options to your guests who are self-ordering. If they have a request that isn’t shown in one of the Optional or Required Modifier Groups prompted to them, they can leave a note in the ‘Additional Notes’ textbox when placing an order.
